Angeleno

Los Angeles was named in Spanish when still it was part of Mexico.  There is some lingering controversy about whether this is Angelino Heights or Angeleno Heights.  Early documentation refers to Angeleno Heights, but current signs mark it as Angelino Heights.  It all depends how much you want to Anglicize it.  I'm not choosing.  I called it Angelino Heights in the previous post.

I  find this painting slightly unnerving.  It teeters on the edge between realistic and what?  cartoony?  primative?  I start to experience depth and then get caught short by flatness.  Anyway, the slope is pretty authentic.  As you might imagine, a place with Heights in the name is hilly.  I'm going to keep forcing myself to paint cars until I get them right.  Then perhaps I'll move on to people if it's not too late.

  1. I was totally drawn to this painting - i LOVE it. Everything about it, I love.

I need to go take a walk through that area and photograph some houses - i don't think I've ever been there.

    1. Thanks Sandy. It is a pretty great collection of houses. I haven't painted the really beautiful ones. I'd love to come up your way and paint in the winter.

    2. You'll have to do that - there are beautiful places around Wrightwood and if you like high desert - lots of yuccas and a few scenic areas but too hot in summer and also google St. Andrews Abbey in Valyermo - that has some scenic areas to see, especially the pond area.

  2. I like it. It's how I'd choose to see the physical world, a little bit on the happy surreal side.

    1. I know what you mean, but it makes me feel a little unbalanced which nags at my happiness.

  4. I like the painting, nice colour harmony and excellent draughtsmanship but i get the teetering feeling too...partly it's the hill, partly the cars facing out of the painting... makes you follow them out of the painting.

    1. Thanks for stopping by and for your comments. You're right about the hill. I don't think excellent draughtsmanship really, but I do like the sky.

  5. I like how you showed the perspective on the green house which is one guess why the perspective gives a sense of unbalance. Which isn't a bad thing. The give and take creates interest.

    1. Also right. I see now that that I added a whole other plane. And it is kind of interesting; it helps prevent it from looking too quaint.

  6. I love your colors and especially that palm tree! Yes, that other plane is terrific.
